Electricity | Pressure | Vibration | Resonance
4 WEEKS Β· 4 INVESTIGATIONS
π ONE-TIME-ONLY BOOMLAB STEAM EXPERIENCE
Jeremy from BoomLab is bringing a special 4-week hands-on STEAM experience to the Hills homeschooling community.
The World Around Us has been designed specifically for Year 5β6 homeschoolers. Younger siblings are also welcome to participate, provided they are comfortable taking part in the hands-on activities
Children will investigate four fascinating phenomena:
Electricity Β· Electrical Potential
Build it. Light it. Power it.
Children build their own circuits and discover how electricity can produce real effects β including lighting an LED and generating power from potatoes.
Investigate: Voltage Β· Current Β· Circuits Β· Conductivity
Pressure Β· The Atmosphere
How can something we can’t see push things around?
Children investigate air pressure and discover how invisible pressure differences can create movement and flow.
Investigate: Pressure Β· Air Β· Flow Β· Breathing
Alternating Pressure Β· Sound
Can you make slime dance?
Children explore vibration by making slime move to sound, then use a microphone and oscilloscope to see and measure the vibrations creating the sound.
Investigate: Vibration Β· Frequency Β· Amplitude Β· Sound
Alternating Tension Β· Strings & Pitch
What happens when vibration finds its rhythm?
Children investigate vibrating strings, exploring how tension, mass and frequency affect pitch β then reveal hidden vibration patterns with Chladni plates.
Investigate: Tension Β· Frequency Β· Pitch Β· Resonance
Each investigation connects to the next, building a bigger picture of the world around us.
Children will be encouraged to observe, question, reason, imagine, experiment and persist.
Why no code?
Because before children learn to write code, we want them to learn how to read the world and control their environment

Jeremy brings a rich background in programming, sound engineering, physics presentation and science educationβbut the real teacher in these workshops is curiosity.
The goal isn’t simply to give children more facts.
It’s to help them discover:
β¨ Find the miracles in the mundane.
π¬ See the science hiding in plain sight.
π‘ Discover that ideas, reason and imagination can change what is possible.
