Meet Mr Jeremy

Jeremy Barton is the founder and lead educator at BoomLab, an Australian education company specialising in STEAM education. His unique background spans education, computer science, sound engineering, music production, electronics, and technology, bringing together both creative and analytical thinking to inspire learners.

Jeremy’s career began in professional audio, where his passion for music and technology led him into sound engineering and production. Since 2007, he has recorded albums in Australia and the United States, created sound design for pop artists, and worked with a leading sound production company on projects involving iconic venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Fox Studios Australia.

Today, Jeremy combines this diverse experience to design engaging STEAM learning experiences for children and educators. Through BoomLab, he has developed and delivered more than 1,500 in-person educational programs, inspiring tens of thousands of children aged 0–12 through hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts,  experiences. His courses focus on inquiry, creativity, critical thinking, and practical classroom strategies that educators can apply immediately.

Beyond education, Jeremy has also worked with the ABC as a sound, physics, and technology consultant for an episode of Catalyst exploring the physics of sound. His passion lies in making complex ideas accessible, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable to learn.

What We Do

BoomLab provides interactive STEAM education/STEAM incursions for children aged 0-12yrs in the Sydney area.
This includes presentations, workshops, and technology environments.

Learn BIG, Learn LOUD!  is our motto.
We explore sound and other aspects of physics with a view of applying that knowledge in the real world.
Ranging from sound design to science experiments where kids actually see sound!
This is what BoomLab does, “we make things with sound”.
In addition to sound, we also explore electricity, electronics, light & colour, digital arts, air pressure, and magnetism.

When first starting BoomLab our early learning consultant advised us not to make lessons that are “dumb-dumb”.
What she meant was, speak in clear terms but don’t  dumb down the communication.
Children have a great gift of boiling down complex concepts into a simple piece of knowledge, we love that.
So we don’t water-down the knowledge, instead we boil it down to the principle idea.
This is the impression the children take away, something clear, exciting, and meaningful.

Let’s Go!

Communication style

Our communication style is energetic!
We view the element of surprise as a spark.
This spark inspires curiosity.
Curiosity and resources give control.
Control gives confidence.
An other major tool we use is repetition for reinforcement.
Linking a new word with an object or action, then repeating those key words at the
right time solidifies the concept.
The outcome is a child who has mad a new meaningful connection!

Impact

The goal of any lesson we provide is to ensure the child leaves the lesson with something new.

3. New objects
4. New actions
5. New surprises
6. New experiences

When something is new and interactive, there is a greater likelihood of memory retention so the information presented now lives inside of the child.
The other impact that is often seen is the impact on families.
Since the child goes home charged with new knowledge, they want to talk about it!
We get feedback from parents saying “BoomLab day is my Childs favourite day!”
Or, “when we have dinner we talk about the new ideas that my child has learned, it becomes a family discussion!”.

Above all, we associate positive feelings with learning!

BoomLab is a high quality educational STEM program that visits our centre on a monthly basis. Not only do the children enjoy the workshops, the educators also find them educational and enjoyable too. At times we have also invited families and their feedback was also positive. The STEM workshops are designed to engage children to develop STEM awareness while having fun. The workshops are delivered from a qualified and experienced facilitator. Jeremy is organised and provides the centre with resources that can be used after his workshops are complete. If you are after a STEM workshop for children aged between 1 to 6 years then this is the program for you. 10/10 you will not be disappointed! Fun, engaging and educational! Boom Lab is hands down the best incursion I have come across in childcare. Jeremy has a gift for curiosity, communication, encouragement and holding space for children. I have worked in the sector for 7 years and never seen anything like Boom Lab. Jeremy prepares a variety of experiences that not only challenge the children, but excite them. He utilises props, technology, sounds and visuals to engage the children and what he puts together each week is nothing short of amazing. Jeremy includes the educators in the incursion by giving them stations to work at with the children and understands what educators need to photograph to send home to parents. Jeremy has a great understanding of child safety and protection as well as the new photography / technology regulations within the ECEC sector. Jeremy doesn’t shy away from the children who are apprehensive or scared of the sounds or visuals. He leans in and encourages them by explaining the experiences, asking questions about the child’s fears and most importantly he includes the educators to support the child. Last year, we had a child who was feeling afraid to participate. Jeremy asked the educators who the child was closest to and asked if that educator could hold the child, bring the child’s comfort toy and engage with the child nearby so they can warm up to the experience at their own pace. Eventually, the child was smiling, looking over and desired to participate within 10-15 minutes. This year, the child ran into Boom Lab with sheer excitement and participated with ease! Jeremy is patient, kind, knowledgeable and so creative. He remembers all of the children’s and staff’s names which makes us feel like we are part of the Boom Lab family. We have happily used BoomLab at our Service for years now.  Jeremy provides professional and fun in house visits for all ages and all experiences are age appropriate.  His passion for what he does shines through the experiences and through his interactions with everyone at the Service. We have booked Jeremy from BoomLab for serval years now and without fail will continue to book with him moving forward.

We had an amazing experience with BoomLab when Jeremy visited our centre to run STEM activities with the children. His sessions were engaging, hands-on and thoughtfully planned to suit a range of age groups.

Jeremy had a wonderful way of explaining concepts in a fun and simple way, sparking curiosity and excitement in the children. The activities encouraged problem-solving, creativity and teamwork and the children were completely captivated from start to finish each session.

Sonic Kitchen have provided us with two very engaging experiences for the children at our service. Our first session children were able to explore movement and vibrations and our second session they were able to identify tracking of movement via their participation. We are incredibly impressed with Sonic Kitchen’s educational program. The way each session is planned are educational, fun and promote love for Science! By focusing on hands-on learning, Jeremy ensures that the children not only learn about theoretical concepts but also understand their practical implications (What happens….!!!!).
The program emphasises on STEAM education, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, hypothesis, curiosity and much more as these are some of the essential skills that are crucial for life-long learning. This has to be one of the most valuable and exciting programs I have had the pleasure to offer to the children in our service. I have worked in Early Education & Care for over 30 years and the STEM program that Jeremy from The Sonic Kitchen offers has to be one of the very best.
Jeremy has a friendly personality who engages the children wonderfully. The Science Workshops each week are met with anticipation and awe. His program is well-organised and articulate to ensure the best outcomes for the children participating. The Activities & Experiments are well-planned, fun, exciting, and hands-on which children love and learn so much. His teaching materials are well written, and staff are prepared and can use them when documenting each experience and all are based on The EYLF. We had Jeremy from The Sonic Kitchen attend our service and provide a wonderful STEM Program for our children aged between 2 years - 5 years. Jeremy was able to adapt each session for each age groups individual needs. Jeremy built some wonderful relationships with the children and was so full of knowledge.
